Major

The social science major offers concentrations in social science and social science/secondary education.

Concentration in Social Science (48 credits)

This concentration is offered for students who have broad interdisciplinary interests in the social sciences. This major offers breadth and depth of preparation across the four disciplines with the intention of developing an interdisciplinary perspective on human behavior.

1. SOCI 201, 204, and 302;

2. Any two of the following three disciplinary sequences: ECON 111, plus 12 credits hours of upper-division ECON; POLS 111, plus 12 credit hours of upper-division POLS; PSYC 111, plus 12 credits hours of upper-division PSYC.

3. One 4-credit course in the above disciplinary concentration not completed. Choices are: ECON 111; POLS 111 or 121; PSYC 111.

Concentration in Social Science/Secondary Education (48 credits)

This concentration is offered for students interested in teaching social science. The middle and secondary school (grades 5-12) social science curriculum includes course work based upon a variety of disciplines. Hence, this concentration provides a broad base of course work with depth in those areas most frequently taught. Students must complete the course work below in addition to fulfilling the requirements for the secondary education minor.

1. SOCI 111, 121, ECON 111, GEOG 230, HIST 152, PSYC 111; and POLS 111 OR 121 OR 223

2. Three upper-division courses from one AREA OF FOCUS chosen from the following:

ECONOMICS: Choose three courses from the following list: ECON 314, 315, 317, 320, 323, 325, 326, 327, 328, 329, 332, 333

HISTORY: Choose three courses from the following list of courses: HIST 317, 319, 322, 323, 333, 347, 357, 358, 361, 362, 364, 365, 366, 368

POLITICAL SCIENCE:

If you took POLS 111 for your introductory course, you must choose ONE of the following courses:

POLS 343, 344, 345, 346, 347, 348, 352, 353, 354, 355

If you took POLS 121 or 223 for your introductory course, you must choose ONE of the following courses:

POLS 312, 323, 324, 325, 331, 332, 333, 334, 338

PLUS TWO additional 4-credit upper-division POLS courses of your choice.

3. ONE upper-division elective (4 credits) from a discipline other than the area of focus (ECON, HIST, PCST, POLS, PSYC or SOCI)

4. ONE course from HIST 386-389 Pro-Sem (4 credits) OR PCST 399 Peace Studies Seminar (4 credits)

Students concentrating in social science/secondary education should consult with the social science division chair as soon as possible.
