SJU robot places at contest.

On April 16, 2004, CSB/SJU sent two robots to compete at the Midwest Instruction and Computing Symposium held at the University of Minnesota, Morris. The first SJU robot, built by Pat Albrecht, Nathaniel Dalbec, Paul Sexton, and Chris Stocker, was one of only two robots that successfully completed the task, and it placed second at the contest. The other SJU robot, built by Joe Federer, joined the majority of competitors in getting sidetracked. Pictures. 17 Apr 2004

Programming teams compete

Today, two teams from CSB/SJU competed in the North Central U.S. Regional contest, a part of the annual ACM International Programming Contest. The teams placed 17th and 32nd in our region of 182 teams, which includes seven states and two provinces. They placed 5th and 9th among the 21 Minnesota teams and 2nd and 5th among the 12 teams from private Minnesota colleges. 8 Nov 2003

Internship event will be October 1

Come to learn about summer internships related to computer science! Seniors Joe Athman, Steven Stoll, and Kevin Truckenmiller will answer questions about their experiences searching for internships and working as an intern. Students who have interned in the past are welcome to attend and contribute! The event will be 7:00pm-8:00pm on October 1 in Peter Engel 225. (Soft drinks and cookies will be available.) 19 Sep 2003

Wanted: Club organizers

At the brainstorming meeting September 2, students suggested several ideas for Computer Science Club activities. Now we need a board of volunteers, chaired by a student coordinator, to collaboratively organize the events. Peter Engel Wireless Network Installed

A wireless network, run by the computer science department, is now installed on the second floor of Peter Engel Science Center. (Wireless networks are already available in both libraries.) Students with notebook computers should be able to access the network in most laboratories and classrooms on the floor. 19 Sep 2003

Computer Science Club to Plan Events

Interested in having an active computer science club at CSB/SJU? Then come to the planning meeting at 7:30pm, Tuesday, September 2, in Peter Engel 225. At the meeting, we will brainstorm for club events this year, elect officers, and enjoy some refreshments. 27 Aug 2003

Programming Teams Start

Improve your problem-solving ability, work with your classmates, earn 1-2 credits, and represent your school in this intercollegiate contest. In the contest format, three-person teams with only one computer work together to solve many interesting programming problems within three to five hours. Students who have completed CSCI 160 or its equivalent are welcome to practices. Practice sessions will meet weekly this semester on Monday evenings. An information session is Tuesday, September 2, 6:30pm, in Peter Engel 204. If you're interested in participating but can't attend the information session, talk to Prof. Carl Burch (PEngl 205, x3172). 27 Aug 2003

Student Research Positions Available

Three positions are available for students to work with faculty on research projects. These are great opportunities to explore a research topic in depth with the guidance of a professor. Classroom Facilities Updated During Summer

Over the summer, the colleges updated two classroom facilities.

• Peter Engel 218 (Windows lab), which held the oldest laboratory computers, received new Windows computers.
• In Peter Engel 238 (Computer classroom), the rear-projection system for the instructor's display is now a front-projection system. This enlarges the projector's display area and gives more chalkboard space.
