Dr. Saupe received his B.S. in biology from Lynchburg College (VA) and completed his M.S. (1977) and Ph.D. (1981) in botany at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He is currently Curator of the Herbarium. He assumed this position in
1994 when Dr. Zaczkowski retired. Dr. Saupe's research interests are in the florisitics of Minnesota plants, especially those of rocky outcrops. He is also interested in chemosystematics. In addition to the standard curatorial tasks, he: (1) supervised the merger of the formerly separate collections from CSB and SJU and reorganized the collections according the Cronquist system; (2) supervised moving the herbarium to its new location after the renovation of the Peter Engel Science Center in 1998; (3) developed displays on Minnesota Grasses and Winter Weeds; (4) started the computer database; (5) wrote and published a "Checklist of Campus Trees" (with Chris Vance) and a "Key to Campus Trees & Shrubs"; (6) wrote several pamphlets concerning the history and use of the h
erbarium; (7) created a web site for the herbarium; (8) initiated the development of a library and reference collection; and (9) developed the laminated and teaching collections. He has deposited many specimens into the herbarium including about 200 specimens from New Zealand.
