German language, history and cultural studies promise excitement enough in the CSB/SJU study abroad program. Throw Salzburg, Austria, into the mix, and the academic and experiential learning opportunities become life-changing. Surrounded by alpine mountains—nearby Untersberg is 2000 meters high—divided by the Salzach River, and guarded by the fortress Hohensalzburg, the old city center is couched between the Kapuzinerberg and Mönchsberg, which act as natural barriers separating the Altstadt from more modern additions. Magnificent baroque architecture enhances this city of churches and palaces, cloisters and courtyards. Salzburg indeed inspires learning: a university was founded there by Benedictine monks in 1617 and is now a state institution.
A favorite in the European treasure chest of urban gems, Salzburg claims a rich and well-preserved history wrapped gift-like in a fairy-tale environment. For example, it is the birthplace of the 18th-century musical genius Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose birth house is a museum open to the public.
The CSB/SJU Salzburg program takes advantage of that setting as a conduit for real-life learning and understanding. German language instruction is an integral part of the program. In addition, specially designed courses in art history, political science and philosophy are offered. One year of college German or equivalent proficiency is required.
The approximate program dates for Austria are early September through mid-December.
