Leah Petermeier is an Ambassador who studied abroad in Spain.
Briefly describe a specific cultural experience you had on your trip that made a lasting impression.
My host parents were amazing. I will always remember the kindness and love they showed me. Every night I would play dominos and chat with them. It was also comforting that they called me 'hija' (daughter) and asked me to use the tu verb form with them because I was a part of their family.
Why did you choose the program in which you participated?
I am a Spanish major and I wanted to be able to backpack though Europe after studying. I also chose Spain over Chile or Guatemala because I had already traveled to both South and Central America.
Describe your overall study abroad experience.
I had the opportunity to make friends with people from around the world (I was friends with some immigrants from Gambia). I also had the opportunity to take part in Spanish culture. My Spanish family provided alot of support for me and helped me to feel welcomed in my new home.
How has the trip affected you? How are you different for having completed the experience?
The trip has made me more confident in myself. It has also helped a lot with my Spanish fluency.
What advice do you have for future Study Abroad Students?
Don't put anything off. You might think that you have a lot of time to do and see everything, but time goes by fast when you're abroad. Don't save everything until the end of study abroad.
