On March 9th the Koch Chair will sponsor a visit to our campuses by Tom Beaudoin, Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University. He will give a talk entitled “Is Your Spirituality Violent?” on Thursday, March 9 at 7:30 in the Alumnae Hall at St. Ben’s.
Here’s Tom’s description:
Shopping, Religion, Classes, Sex, Violence. What do these all have to do with one another? Building on his work in Consuming Faith, Tom Beaudoin will look at the interplay of spirituality, corporate branding, and violence. Following from this, he will ask whether Catholic thought and practice is complicit in some forms of violence today, specifically in regard to the ways that Catholic education and sexuality are governed, and consider what a theological nonviolence in regard to these practices might look like.
Sex, religion, and violence—what more could you ask for?
Beaudoin received his Master of Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School and his Ph.D. in Religion and Education from Boston College in 2001. Beaudoin is the author of Virtual Faith (1998), and Consuming Faith: Integrating Who We Are with What We Buy (2003).
