Support for New Faculty

The LES team believes that a critical part of our task is helping newcomers get acclimated to teaching at CSB/SJU.  Our goal is to be of assistance to both teaching novices, and to those with lots of experience who are changing schools.  To this end, we offer several programs especially for new faculty.

  • We run a brief orientation in August that provides an profile of our students and an introduction to the teaching climate here.
  • New faculty are paired with more experienced mentors who can offer support and advice on everything from teaching to where to find things in the area.  This program is informal and is designed to allow the "mentees" to determine the level of interaction they desire.   Mentors and mentees are invited to at least two conversations during the Fall; to share experiences, discuss survival strategies, and to talk about approaches to teaching.
  • LES sponsors a largely social gathering for new faculty in the Fall and a more intensive off-campus retreat in the Spring which brings together first and second year CSB/SJU faculty for part of a weekend in late January.
