Why LAI?

Writing is a craft and art. It sharpens critical and analytical abilities and allows us to know ourselves. The Literary Arts Institute of the College of Saint Benedict is an expression of our deep and abiding commitment to the written word. Since its founding, the College has embraced the distinctive values of liberal and fine arts, with writing at its very center.

Since 1997, the Literary Arts Institute has celebrated our heritage by promoting the work of the best contemporary writers and by giving voice to new and emerging writers through its three signature programs:Writers Writing, Book Arts Studio, and the Sister Mariella Gable Book Awards.
