Q: What changes have occurred in the editing facilities since spring of 2004?
A: The video editing stations are now located in Quad 451-1 in a single climate-controlled room. In addition, you now need to get your student ID validated to get in and out of the room. The PC and audio/video racks have been replaced with Apple G5 computer systems that are equipped with digital video input only. The video editing software has also been changed from Adobe Premiere to Final Cut Pro HD. With the new simplified input and industry standard software suite, the editing stations are now much more stable and user-friendly.
Q: Who can use the 4th Quad Video Editing Facilities?
A: The 4th Quad Video Editing Facilities are open to any CSB/SJU faculty, staff, and students who have been trained on the use of the equipment and have scheduled work time. Contact Adam Bauer at SJU Media to setup an orientation session.
Q: When are the Editing Facilities open for use?
A: The editing facilities are normally open from 7:00am to 12:00am.
Q: Where are video projects stored?
A: Students, faculty, or staff wishing to use the editing facilities must check out a large capacity portable FireWire hard drive from Media Services. All personal data, projects, and resources must be kept on this drive. This ensures that individuals may work at any of the editing stations and still access their files. Files stored on the editing stations' internal hard drives are not secure and will be subject to deletion by SJU Media staff. Each portable hard drive is stored in a locked drawer in the editing room, and is not to leave Quad 451-1.
Q: What medium can my video be on?
A: Each video editing station is equipped with a mini-DV tape deck. Digital video tape has recently become the standard for most amateur and professional video editing. DVD authoring software is also available on each station. You can create your own menu and burn a DVD right at your station. Other formats such as Hi-8 and VHS may be captured by special arrangement using equipment available from Media Services in Quad 443.
Q: What learning resources are available for the video equipment and software?
A: In addition to the tutorial page located here, informational books, tutorials, and reference manuals are located in the video editing room for use. Media staff is also available during weekday mornings and afternoons for questions and troubleshooting advice.
Q: Do the video editing computers have network access?
A: To guarantee stability and reliability and protect our machines from adware, spyware, and viruses, the video editing computers no longer have internet or network access. Any files that users may need for their projects must now be brought on a CD, DVD, USB flash drive, or other compatible medium.
