Commemorating the Minnesota arrival of the Benedictines in 1856
Abbot John Klassen, OSB and the monks of Saint John’s Abbey cordially invite you to attend a Liturgical Celebration in honor of the 1856 Minnesota Arrival of the Benedictine Monks in Saint Paul.
The Benedictines came to Minnesota in 1856 from Saint Vincent Abbey, Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and, earlier, to Latrobe in 1846 from Metten Abbey in Bavaria, Germany. After receiving an invitation from Bishop Joseph Cretin to come to Minnesota, five monks left Pennsylvania on April 5, 1856, traveling by steamboat for about four weeks before arriving in Saint Paul, where they were warmly received by Bishop Cretin on May 2, 1856.
This celebration will take place at:
Assumption Church
51 Seventh Street West
Saint Paul, Minnesota 55102
Sunday, April 30, 2006
