Benedictines in Central Minnesota — 150 Years

Olde Johnnie Ale is now available at several locations throughout Central Minnesota.  The formula is the brain child of SJP alumnus, Mark Selner ’68, and is based on a mid-1800s Bavarian style brew for taste, color and body.

The first official tapping of Old Johnnie Ale took place at noon on Saturday May 20th before it became available for sale to the general public.  Abbot John Klassen, OSB ’67 blessed the ale in perpetuity and consumed the first glass.  The ceremony was held at Brother Willie’s Pub during “Family Fun Day—Remembering Swayed Pines”, one of the major sesquicentennial events sponsored by Saint John’s Abbey, Liturgical Press, Preparatory School, and University.

The ale is brewed at the Gluek Brewery in Cold Spring, Minnesota – also celebrating 150 years in business – and it will be distributed by Bernick’s in Waite Park, as well as by other distributors throughout the Upper Midwest.

The ale is sold only in kegs at this point.  Feel free to ask your favorite liquor store or bar to include Olde Johnnie Ale as an option for you and your family and friends.  The Prep School plans to feature Olde Johnnie Ale as the beverage of choice at all of its events where beer would be normally served.  In addition, Brother Willie’s Pub will feature Olde Johnnie Ale on tap for as long as alumni and friends are interested

Souvenirs featuring the Olde Johnnie Ale logo are available from the Prep School, or by contacting the SJP Alumni/ae Office.
