Donna Madej (MA Theology, 1980) These last ten years I have found contemplative Benedictine influences coming to me in a new way that combines my monastic background, my musicianship, my background in counseling and my skills as a hospital chaplain. I am working at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children’s Hospital in Spokane as a music-thanatologist. This means I use harp and voice at the bedside to respond to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of the dying through prescriptive music. Music-Thanatology is a new field that has its roots in the medieval monasteries such as the one at Cluny, where monks would use music and prayer to tend to the dying, helping them move toward a peaceful death. Rites around the deathbed were centered around forgiveness, increasing a sense of belonging, and addressing fears with prayer and music. I have indeed learned the meaning of Benedict’s
admonition to “Keep death daily before one’s eyes” in this practice of contemplative musicianship.

Jim Neppl (MA PMin, 2007) continues his work as a spiritual director, finding new ways to guide people in their spiritual journeys. “Recently, I was invited to be the spiritual director for a small band of men venturing into the wilderness and was honored to have this opportunity to expand my own awareness of God’s economy in and through other explorers. I provided a copy of Benedictine Values on a small, laminated card, the bookmark for our journals and travels. We reflected how this adventure transformed our understanding of what it means to be a contemporary male, spiritual, Christian and disciple.”

The Board of Directors of Columbia Gorge Community College (The Dalles, Oregon) named the library for Rosemary Ross (MA, 1968) who established the facility after the 1994 relocation of the campus. Dr. Susan Wolff, chief academic officer for the college, said Ross took on a daunting challenge to build up the library. She began her career as a rare book cataloguer for the University of Iowa and worked on several other college campuses, including as librarian for Northwest Community College in Nome, Alaska. When Ross began her job in The Dalles, she was the only full-time staffer in the library with a part-time assistant. She worked from a tiny desk in the college’s mailroom and helped outfit the library, which was in the process of being remodeled and did not even have light fixtures. She personally chose each item of the library’s collection, including more than 10,000 books, 100 periodical titles, computer systems and software programs.

CURE, under the leadership of the Sullivans, has been tireless in advancing its mission to insure that when imprisonment is necessary, those incarcerated have the resources needed to turn their lives around. Members of CURE, many of whom are former prisoners or family and friends of prisoners, work for the improvement of the criminal justice system.
